The rise of social media and the obsession with appearances are causing today’s generation to experience increasing pressure to be thin and “perfect.” As a result, eating disorders are on the rise. However, like all disorders, eating disorders are not simple. When it comes to eating disorders such as Binge Eating Disorder (BED), the origin is generally the result of a much deeper psychological trauma.
A binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States, affecting 3.5% of females and 2% of males. This disorder is a binge-type eating behavior that is seen more often in individuals who are obese, although it has been known to occur in normal weight individuals. In fact, people seeking weight loss treatment are 30% more likely to develop a binge eating disorder.
A person who has a binge eating disorder diagnosis is different than an individual who is compulsively overeating. Those with a binge eating disorder don’t obsess about overeating and do not spend lots of time fantasizing about food. Instead, people with a binge eating disorder have very negative feelings about food. A binge eating disorder is an expressive eating disorder, which means that it is an expression of deeper psychological problems that can by helped by binge eating disorder treatment.
Some researchers believe that binge eating disorder is a milder form of bulimia nervosa, while others firmly believe that it is a stand alone and distinct disorder. With a binge eating disorder diagnosis, there is a cycle that has occurred. This cycle usually begins with a momentary feeling of comfort when first eating. Shortly after, a feeling of regret and self-loathing ensues. The cycle continues as those with a binge eating disorder eat often enough to lead to weight gain and obesity, which then reinforces binge eating behaviors. The worse a binge eater feels about their appearance, the more they use food to cope.
