At Avalon Malibu, we help you turn a mood disorder diagnosis into an opportunity for transformation. At our Grand House, we are pleased to provide a treatment program that significantly targets an individual’s specific mental health needs.
A mood disorder is a mental health condition in which a disturbance in the person’s mood is theorized to be the main underlying issue.
Two groups of mood disorders are broadly recognized. There are depressive disorders, of which the most familiar and researched is major depressive disorder (MDD), also called clinical depression or major depression. This group also includes bipolar disorder (BD), which is sometimes referred to as manic depression and is characterized by intermittent episodes of mania or hypomania, usually entwined with depressive episodes.
Mood disorders also pertain to psychiatric syndromes that are less severe forms of depression. Mood disorders may occur in response to substance abuse or other medical conditions.
The physicians, therapists and practitioners at Avalon Malibu are experienced, licensed professionals who are familiar with the complexity of mood disorders. At Avalon Malibu we offer around-the-clock care that includes on-site nursing seven days a week.
Avalon Malibu’s Grand House is licensed under strict rules set forth by the California Department of Social Services (DSS) and certified by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Department of Health Services (DHS) to specifically work with mood disorder clients. In the Grand House we have private, mostly single rooms that are beautifully designed. Avalon is the only treatment center in Malibu that has direct access to the beach and serene Pacific Ocean. The prime location and natural beauty of the area help to create an uplifting environment.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA states that “roughly one-quarter of alcoholics, and half of drug addicts, will be diagnosed with a primary or secondary mental health condition.” Mood Disorders co-occur frequently with other disorders, and at Avalon Malibu our therapists implement a variety of holistic and research-based psychotherapies specifically prescribed for each client. Our goal is to bring comfort and healing in a safe, contained and nurturing environment.
Sometimes a mood disorder stems from prolonged use of a chemical or toxic substance. Often it may be the development of intoxication and or withdrawal. Stimulants such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, and cocaine have been known to cause manic, hypo-manic, mixed, and depressive episodes which stimulate mood disorders. Addicts, who have been on a cycle of abuse over time, tend to develop mood disorders from the negative feelings that go along with their cycle of addiction.
At Avalon Malibu we specialize in treating mood disorder conditions by offering therapeutic interventions that are founded on evidenced-based principles of mindfulness, awareness, acceptance, investigation and change.
