Residential Treatment

Highest Standards, Nationally Recognized:

When substance use or mental health disorders are at their strongest, they become a constant and all-consuming presence.  An addicted person may prioritize drugs or alcohol over their health or their loved ones. Someone with depression, anxiety or trauma may be unable to participate in daily activities or favorite hobbies. Personalities, interests, habits, and relationships are all changed in the presence of these concerns. New — often harmful — patterns emerge and quickly cement themselves in the affected individual’s life.

Getting back to a sober or healthy place requires a clean break in the cycle of behaviors caused by chemical dependency or mental health disorders. Our residential program in Malibu, CA provides exactly that: by offering a completely new, safe and structured environment for treatment, clients are given a chance to reset their lives and start fresh in recovery. Avalon Malibu’s signature luxury residential experience is available for clients dealing with addiction, mental health concerns or co-occurring disorders. Our two residential homes in Malibu, California, offer a peaceful retreat away from the stresses of daily life. Our clients gain the resources and clarity they need to identify and eliminate negative behavior patterns for good, and to replace them with the sustainable healthy living practices that we teach and reinforce during their months in treatment.

Is Residential Treatment Right for Me or My Loved One?

Residential treatment, sometimes called inpatient treatment, is one of the most common types of recovery programs. This type of treatment is characterized by full-time, round-the-clock care: clients live at the facility where they receive treatment and engage in fully scheduled, highly structured days that include a variety of therapies and recovery-related activities. Our professional staff is available 24/7 to attend to emergencies, to monitor clients or to defuse emotionally charged situations.

Most individuals who struggle with addiction will attend a residential program at some point in their course of care. Those with a co-occurring addiction and mental health disorder are also likely to spend time in a residential facility that offers targeted treatment. For those experiencing symptoms of a primary mental health disorder, options for residential or inpatient treatment have historically been limited to psychiatric hospital settings. With Avalon Malibu’s state license and accreditation for providing treatment for primary mental health disorders, we have the unique ability to offer individuals targeted mental health treatment in the comfort of a home-like environment. Residential treatment for individuals with a primary diagnosis of a mental health disorder is less common, but it is proven effective and is one of the offerings that sets Avalon Malibu apart from other recovery centers both locally and nationwide.

Our residential program is open to adult men and women from all backgrounds and walks of life. We welcome those who are seeking recovery for the first time as well as those who have been through treatment — either residential or not — but have experienced a relapse. In particular, residential treatment is recommended for individuals who:

  • Have been struggling with chemical dependency or mental health disorders for a long time
  • Have recently completed a detox program
  • Do not have a stable, sober or supportive living environment
  • Can commit fully to the treatment experience
  • Have not had success in outpatient treatment
  • Are seeking or in need of comprehensive, full-time care

How Long Does Residential Treatment Last?

Residential treatment programs are intended to be a temporary, intensive phase of treatment. Many traditional residential facilities offer specific programs that work on a 30-, 60- or 90-day schedule — however, while it is typical for clients to spend approximately three months in residential treatment, these restrictive timelines can prevent clients from getting the individualized care they need to make a full recovery. Not every person has the same experience with chemical or emotional dependency, and as such, not every person will work through therapy at the same rate.

To address our clients’ needs on a more personal level, the residential programming at Avalon is designed to support the progress of clients moving through their treatment experience, with ongoing discussions about the length of stay and recommendations for continuing care. Avalon’s clinical and medical team work together with each client to ensure they are progressing through treatment at a pace that is comfortable and effective. When the client’s team is satisfied with their progress at the residential level of care, we will recommend options for discharge and continuing care treatment, and provide a structured continuing care plan. Avalon Malibu also provides intensive outpatient programming (IOP) and transitional programming for a seamless discharge process.
