Mental illness takes on many forms, including bipolar disorders. Two significant sub-types of bipolar disorders are treated at Avalon Malibu’s Grand House – Bipolar Disorder I and Bipolar Disorder II. With the resources available at Avalon Malibu you can rest assured that we will provide the finest bipolar disorder treatment available.
Bipolar Disorder I is classified as a mood disorder. It is the most severe form of manic depression, and is distinguished by one or more manic episodes, usually accompanied by major depressive episodes.
During manic episodes of Bipolar 1 Disorder, a person may develop delusions and even suffer from hallucinations. These are the symptoms of psychosis. When this happens, the condition is called Bipolar I with psychotic features. Bipolar I can critically impair a person’s daily functioning.
A manic episode is diagnosed when an elevated mood occurs with three or more of the other symptoms listed above for most of the day, almost every day, for one week or longer. When a mood is based on irritability, four additional symptoms need to be present.
Bipolar II Disorder is similar to Bipolar I Disorder, with moods cycling between high and low. The difference in Bipolar II Disorder is that the elevated mood never reaches full-on mania. Bipolar II Disorder may appear less intense then Bipolar I. Elevated moods in Bipolar II Disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania.
A client affected by Bipolar II Disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in their life. It is also common for people with Bipolar II Disorder to suffer from depression. This is where the term “manic depression” stems from. Many people with Bipolar II Disorder live normal lives even as they traverse between episodes of hypomania and depression. Avalon Malibu is committed to helping clients discover a more fulfilling life and imparts tools for recovery for those diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder II.
Like most mental disorders, bipolar disorder comes in various gradations. Those afflicted with a milder version generally require a break from the stresses of the world as well as therapy. For persons suffering from severe mania it is recommended that they choose an extended stay at a professional treatment center and take medication to control their most manic episodes.
