What is Bipolar I Disorder?

Bipolar Disorder I is classified as a mood disorder. It is the most severe form of manic depression, and is distinguished by one or more manic episodes, usually accompanied by major depressive episodes.

During manic episodes of Bipolar 1 Disorder, a person may develop delusions and even suffer from hallucinations. These are the symptoms of psychosis. When this happens, the condition is called Bipolar I with psychotic features. Bipolar I can critically impair a person’s daily functioning.

Characteristics of Mania:

  • Racing thoughts
  • Sleeplessness
  • Grandiosity
  • Excess energy
  • Forced and fast speech
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Risk taking behavior

A manic episode is diagnosed when an elevated mood occurs with three or more of the other symptoms listed above for most of the day, almost every day, for one week or longer. When a mood is based on irritability, four additional symptoms need to be present.

Characteristics of Major Depression in Bipolar I Disorder:

  • Low energy
  • Despondency
  • Lethargy
  • Withdrawal from activities
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Delusions
  • Irritability
  • Continuous crying
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Hallucinations

What is Bipolar Disorder II?

Bipolar II Disorder is similar to Bipolar I Disorder, with moods cycling between high and low. The difference in Bipolar II Disorder is that the elevated mood never reaches full-on mania. Bipolar II Disorder may appear less intense then Bipolar I. Elevated moods in Bipolar II Disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania.

A client affected by Bipolar II Disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in their life. It is also common for people with Bipolar II Disorder to suffer from depression. This is where the term “manic depression” stems from. Many people with Bipolar II Disorder live normal lives even as they traverse between episodes of hypomania and depression. Avalon Malibu is committed to helping clients discover a more fulfilling life and imparts tools for recovery for those diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder II.
