Color psychology may sound a bit silly, but it’s not – as research has shown just how much of an impact colors can have on our mood and mentality. The colors we wear, the colors that we incorporate in our daily living environments and the foods we eat can have an impact on our perceptions and, in some cases, how we feel. Very Well Mind, a website that publishes information related to cognitive psychology, behavioral therapy, developmental psychology and personality psychology explained that when used in therapeutic settings, colors can have significant therapeutic influences:

  • Red can stimulate the mind and body, and can increase circulation
  • Yellow has been said to stimulate the nerves and purify the body
  • Orange is thought to heal the lungs and increase a person’s energy levels
  • Blue can help soothe illnesses and treat any pain that is experienced
  • Indigo shades are supposedly able to help reduce skin problems

Several years ago, color specialist Leatrice Eiseman told the Huffington Post that: “We have a repository of information about a color. For example, the color blue is almost always associated with blue skies, which when we are children is a positive thing – it means playing outside and fun. Evolutionarily it also means there are no storms to come. This is why it reminds us of stability and calm.”

The next time you get the chance, take a look at your living environment. What colors are present, and what feelings do they evoke within you? Better yet – how do you want to feel? Colors can hold a great deal of weight in our daily lives, and if we can provide more conscious thought to them, we may be able to influence our days in more positive ways than we previously realized.
