The Healing Power and Meaning of Colors

Highest Standards, Nationally Recognized:

The colors of the rainbow, found in the natural world, offer powerful healing benefits and meaningful insight.

Colors have been used for centuries to induce certain moods, promote healing, ease stress, and create a mood. All of the colors of the rainbow are found in various forms throughout nature. All we have to do is pay attention and be present. Artists, interior designers, healers, and color therapists understand the tremendous impact that colors have on our moods. As humans, we are susceptible to the energy of our environments. For instance, a room painted red will have a very different feeling, look, and effect on your mood than a room painted white or beige. Similarly, when we spend time in nature, we typically feel more alive, refreshed, and connected than when we spent lots of time indoors. In this article, we’ll look at various colors, where they can be found in the natural world, and what kind of healing powers and mood enhancements they can offer. We’ll also talk about some practical ways to incorporate the magic of color into your everyday life.

Green

Green is often associated with life itself. The green leaves on trees and the fresh moss in a forest are indicative of health, growth, and oxygen. Green is said to promote balance, as it falls in the middle of the color spectrum. It’s a mixture of warm and cool tones, creating feelings harmony, peace, and ease. Green leafy vegetables, forests, algae, and moss all offer those harmonious green tones.

Yellow

Yellow is a warm tone that we often associate with the sun, happiness, and innocent joy. Yellow is a bright color and in color therapy, is said to promote wisdom. If you’re seeking clarity, increased energy, and insight, try surrounding yourself with yellow. Sunflowers, the sun, and dandelions all have that energetic yellow color.

Orange

Orange is a vibrant color and is said to be associated with joy and creativity. It’s brighter and more energetic than orange, but not quite as intense as red. Orange is an empowering color and can give us physical and mental energy, vibrancy, and happiness. Orange can be found in certain sands and soils, tangerines, and oranges.

Red

Red is perhaps the most vibrant color of all. Red often symbolizes life itself. Our blood is red and so we associate it with our physical selves, action, vitality, fire, passion, and creativity. Red is an extremely stimulating color and is said to be associated with decreased depression and increased energy. In nature, red is found in strawberries, rasperries, and red peppers. In color therapy, it’s said that red should be avoided if you’re prone to anxiety or heightened blood pressure.

Violet

Violet is often associated with our intuition and psychic powers. Violet is somewhat calming and can be used to get heightened insight into a problem or simply get in touch with your intuition. We sometimes associate violet with leaders, royalty, or sovereignty. We can use violet to calm ourselves while stimulating and uplifting our spirits. Violet is a vibrant color and can be found in violet flowers, mulberries, and other wildflowers and berries.

Blue

Blue is an extremely calming and healing color. It has a soothing effect and can help us feel peaceful, calm, and relaxed. Blue is the color of the sky and the ocean. We associate the color blue with vastness, space, possibilities, and imagination. Surround yourself with the color blue, head to the ocean, or spend some time gazing at the sky if you’re feeling anxious, angry, or confused. The color blue is calming and can offer perspective and a fresh sense of spaciousness and clarity.

Warm Tones Vs. Cool Tones

Warm tones like red, orange and yellow are generally more energizing and warming. Turn to these colors if you’re feeling depressed, sad, or low-energy. Conversely, cooler tones like blue, indigo, and violet are more calming and soothing. Use blue colors if you’re feeling anxious or nervous.

Practical Ways to Use Colors in Daily Life for Healing and Clarity

These colors can be found in nature and when we spend time near the ocean, in the forest, or simply walking around our neighborhoods we can get some of the healing powers of the natural world’s rainbows. Additionally, you can start to pay attention to how you’re feeling and take it from there. If you wake up feeling anxious, you might want to spend some time looking at the blue sky, meditating on the color blue or violet, thinking about or looking at the ocean, or even wear the color blue. If you’re feeling sad, depressed, or fatigued, you might want to spend some extra time in the sun, wear the color yellow or red, or even eating foods like oranges, yellow peppers, or berries.

Color Meditation

There are plenty of guided color meditations to help you with many different ailments. You can visualize all of the colors of the rainbow as you focus on various areas in your body. In energy healing, colors are meant to correspond with different areas of the body, known as energy centers, or chakras. Red is the root chakra and is said to lie at the base of the spine. The colors go up the spine, all the way to the crown of the head, which is associated with the color purple. You can use the colors to navigate your own energy field, feelings, and creativity.
