Recovery is a lot like life. It has ups and downs, twists and turns, and a lot of unexpected surprises. While many people dread the unexpected, it’s actually what works best for us because it forces us to grow and develop into stronger, more capable human beings. You are incredibly strong. If you are reading this right now, you are already on your way towards success in recovery because you’re taking the time to focus in on bettering yourself. Recovery involves many stages, each of which you will work through in due time – which is why patience and determination is incredibly important.

There are five main stages of change. Take a look at these descriptions and consider where you’re at right now:

Stage 1: Pre-contemplation – You don’t really see a problem with where you’re at right now. Your friends and family have stated that you have a problem, but you aren’t taking what they have to say seriously at this time.

Stage 2: Contemplation – You can see some merit into what your loved ones are saying when they state you have a problem. You’ve started contemplating some solutions, but you don’t have a set date for starting anything.

Stage 3: Preparation – You definitely plan to act and you have everything set in place. You’re feeling a little skeptical, however, because you’re not quite sure you’re doing the right thing and you don’t exactly know what to expect.

Stage 4: Action – You have been spending considerable time and energy towards your recovery goals. You’ve made major strides and have changed many aspects of your daily life to become more conducive to your recovery.

Stage 5: Maintenance – You have been working on your recovery for quite some time, with no plans to stop. Even though your old issues aren’t a factor of your life anymore, you know that you still need to stay actively involved in your recovery if you want to avoid relapsing.

Each stage serves as a crucial step towards realizing your goals for your life. Each stage takes time – that’s why they say that recovery is a lifelong journey. Don’t rush yourself through the journey. Take your time, soak everything in, and breathe. You’ll be just fine.
