Techniques to Help you Fall Asleep

Insomnia or difficulty with sleep can affect the body dramatically. It is common to experience irregular sleeping patterns as a symptom when an individual suffers from mental health disorders or trauma. The inability to get good sleep can lead to a decline in physical health and mental health.

Importance of Sleep

Getting regular sleep is essential to the body and the mind. It can affect your focus and productivity at work or the ability to complete simple tasks. For example, if you are lacking sleep, it can interfere with your body’s food regulation. It boosts your athletic rhythm, and you will have more natural energy. It lowers your risk of heart disease.

Sleep also helps your social and emotional awareness. If your friend is having a bad day, you are more likely to experience sensitivity or understanding when you get good sleep. It can prevent depression, and there is a direct correlation between lack of sleep/sleeping too much and depression.

It helps you stay motivated and happy. When you are not getting regular sleep, you are more likely to become irritable and reactive. Your lack of focus will cause irritability to intensify as well.

Sleeping Techniques

The 4-7-8 Method

The 4-7-8 Method is a breathing technique that helps your body and mind relax so that it can fall asleep. This technique is useful when you feel restless, or your mind will not stop chattering. You breathe in deeply for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds and then exhale slowly and make a “whoosh” sound for 8 seconds. You do this technique up to 4 times.

Most people find this puts them to sleep within a few minutes. It could be helpful to do this while listening to relaxing music or a guided meditation.

Guided Meditation

Listening to a guided meditation can help your mind relax and let go of whatever it is chattering about. It could be a person leading the meditation or one that just includes calming sounds.

White Noise Machine

White noise machines are proven to help the body relax since they are focused on repetitive noise. Some people prefer classical music.
