How to Start a Regular Yoga Practice

Here are some tips for starting a regular yoga practice for your mind and body.

Starting a regular yoga practice is a great idea. When we truly commit to mindfulness practices or exercises, we start to reap the rewards. Yoga is no exception. When we start to practice yoga regularly, we start to feel more connected to our minds, bodies, and the world around us. We start to feel more flexible, strong, and clear-headed. We start to notice our breath, become more mindful and less stressed, and we begin to feel a deeper connection with spirit. Sometimes the prospect of starting a new habit or routine can be daunting and the mental stress of thinking about it can prevent us from starting it all together. Here are some tips for how to start a regular yoga practice so that you can experience the wonderful mind-body benefits.

  • Make time and space. This is simple but vital. When we create designated space in our homes for yoga practice and carve out time, we’ve acknowledged our commitment and desire. Set aside 15-30 minutes in the beginning. Your space doesn’t need to be much bigger than a yoga mat.
  • Find a yoga studio. Taking yoga classes either regularly or once in a while can help us stay on track with our practice. Additionally, it introduces us to a whole new community of people who are also interested in yoga. Try out a few studios before deciding which one is right for you.
  • Pick a sequence. There are many online yoga sites and resources for practice sequences. Choose one as a jumping-off point and incorporate it into your daily life.
  • Leave room for play. Leave space and time on your yoga mat to get in tune with your body, experiment with different postures, and get into the flow. One of the joys of yoga is its joyfulness.

End your practice with a short meditation and/or a savasana. This will seal the space, help with relaxation, make your mind and body feel refreshed and replenished, and prepare you for the rest of your day.
