The 3 Steps of Detoxification

The 3 Steps of Detoxification

Beginning addiction treatment can be scary at first, but it is the best step you can take for yourself and your future. This exciting new journey you are about to embark on is one to be incredibly proud of. At Avalon Malibu, the first level of care begins with the detox stage. There are three steps of detoxification involved that serve to get you through the process comfortably using the most effective evidence-based methods.

A Breakdown of Detoxification

Detoxification is characterized by “the use of physician and nursing staff and the administration of medication to assist people through withdrawal safely.” This essentially means that a client will be monitored by a professional medical staff to ensure a safe and comfortable withdrawal process.

While your body gradually cleanses itself of any lingering substances (detox), the brain will release messages throughout the body telling you that you need more of the substance you are detoxing from. This result is known as withdrawals. The symptoms of withdrawals range from mild to severe and can be very uncomfortable if not monitored and treated accordingly.

The purpose of detoxification at Avalon Malibu is not only to cleanse your body of harmful substances but to ensure that you get through the process in the most comfortable manner. Through close monitoring and medication management, we help your transition away from substances to be free from the stresses of withdrawal symptoms.

Step 1: Evaluation

Before the process of detoxification can begin, a complete medical evaluation must be performed. This is done not only to determine the need for detox but also to develop a treatment plan that will follow the detoxification process. Clients will meet with a registered psychiatrist to evaluate and diagnose any current mental health issues as well as to identify the substance(s) in need of detoxification.

Step 2: Stabilization

Withdrawal symptoms can be challenging to experience. At Avalon Malibu, we take the nature of these symptoms very seriously and aim to make our clients as comfortable as possible. By monitoring every aspect of detoxification, we are able to stabilize the physical side effects of withdrawal through medication and nutrition management, thus preventing pains and tremors that often occur during detox.

Step 3: Entry Into Treatment

After the process of detoxification is complete, clients can begin their recovery journey in a rehabilitation program. Through these programs, they will participate in therapeutic work. This often includes individual and group counseling that assists in the discovery of the underlying causes of addiction.

Self-medicating is often done to get through difficult situations or even to cope with traumas. By finding the source that led to this self-medication, we are able to instill the skills in our clients to find new healthy coping mechanisms and teach them to not only process their triggers and stressors but to work through them as well.

What Treatment Looks Like

At Avalon Malibu, we offer multiple rehabilitation programs that are built to work with all walks of life. We take every individual’s needs into consideration in order to ensure the most customized and efficient treatment plan every time. Our programs are fully adaptable, which allows for the various changes that life may throw at you.

For rehabilitation, we offer both intensive outpatient and residential programs. These are geared specifically toward recovery from all substances, whether drugs or alcohol. All programs feature various therapeutic methods such as psychodrama, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and many others.

Residential Care

In severe cases, we recommend our residential plan, which takes place in our Cottage House. This features a home-like setting where our clients are able to set aside the daily stresses of life and focus solely on their recovery journey. Clients will receive top-quality care and 24/7 access to our professional medical staff.

Intensive Outpatient

When clients are unable to put life on hold, we recommend our intensive outpatient program (IOP). This is geared toward the working adult that may be unable to take time from work or has other responsibilities that can’t be set aside. In this program, clients still receive the same superb care as residential treatment but have a fully flexible schedule built to suit their individual needs both in the clinic and out.
