Xanax addiction is rapidly approaching epidemic proportions in the United States. One of the challenges in battling this epidemic is the inability to effectively identify the signs and symptoms that are commonly associated with it.

Without being able to recognize the symptoms of Xanax addiction, it is impossible for loved ones to take action and intervene. Because Xanax is used as a common short-term treatment for anxiety disorders, it is easily accessible, presenting a high potential for addiction.

Understanding the Prevalence of Xanax Addiction

For a number of years, Xanax addiction has been a consistently growing problem, especially among teens and young adults, many of whom became introduced to the drug as a youth.

While statistical data on Xanax abuse and addiction is somewhat ambiguous, it is clear that the benzodiazepine class of medications, of which Xanax is a member, presents a significant problem, with more 61,000 people seeking treatment for addiction on an annual basis.

Signs and Symptoms of Xanax Addiction

According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of Xanax addiction can vary with each individual in frequency, occurrence and intensity. However, there are some symptoms that are extremely common among those who are struggling with Xanax addiction, like the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Hyperactivity
  • Rage and Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Mania

In addition to the physical symptoms, Xanax addiction can also produce a number of behavioral issues. One specific behavior that is exceptionally common among individuals who are struggling with a Xanax addiction is “doctor shopping,” which is the act of visiting multiple doctors for the purpose of acquiring multiple prescriptions for the drug.

Additionally, it is not uncommon for someone who is addicted to Xanax to develop the inclination to steal and participate in other risky behavior to obtain Xanax. Someone who is addicted to Xanax will often experience a substantial decrease in their inhibitions. It is not out of the ordinary to see a rise in hostility and violence.

Common Causes of Xanax Addiction

Xanax addiction is like most addictions to controlled substances. There is no one specific variable that serves as a constant in the development of the addiction. According to a report published by WebMD, some people are more genetically inclined to chemical dependency, while others become victims of their environment. However, abusing Xanax is a major contributing factor in developing an addiction to the drug.

Recognizing some of the common symptoms could lead to proper intervention and early treatment, which can raise the chance of long-term recovery.
