Being There for a Loved One with Addiction

Loved one with addiction

One of the most challenging situations a person can experience is helping a loved one overcome addiction – and the mere change of pursuing recovery can be extremely difficult for everyone involved. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it will be worth it for those we love.

We can help them by creating an environment that is positive for their ultimate healing and recovery. It will take lots of time, but we can reward our loved ones for working towards their mental, physical, and spiritual health in a variety of ways – through affection, kindness, working with them, and just being there. We can also strive to promote positive behaviors, rather than flooding them with shame and guilt.

What You Can Do, and What You Can’t

We don’t always know what to expect with addiction recovery until we’re in that situation. Doing research and seeking help are both important – whether your loved one is currently in the throes of addiction, or has already worked on recovery and is headed back home.

If you’d like to create a structured, safe environment for your loved one at home, consider doing the following:

  1. Understand the true nature of addiction.
  2. Face the truth, even if it’s difficult to do so.
  3. Take a step back from time to time to recognize your own behaviors.
  4. Set boundaries with your loved one when they ask for something that will only hurt them – or you – further.
  5. Look after yourself and practice self-care frequently.

One of the most difficult realizations for any family member to experience is to recognize that they can’t force their loved one to do anything. While providing your loved one with money, resources, and time may feel beneficial, one of the best things you can do is to help them get into a treatment center. But remember, the decision to get sober – and to stay sober – is ultimately theirs.
