Each year, millions of people across the world die by suicide, and itโs tragic. While many people donโt realize it, what we see on the T.V. screen and how suicide is depicted in the movies plays a major role in how we view this issue and how itโs talked about in our society. Quite a few shows and movies have received negative attention over the years due to the seeming glamorization of suicide. Preventative measures were not shown in the media until people started speaking up against it.
Suicide preventative measures are greatly lacking in media coverage:ย
- Prevention is not discussed enough
- Suicide is used as a dramatic storyline without adding any depth of discussion or resources for serious help and support
- Music in media often glamorizes sadness and is used to perpetuate a depressive mood
- High-risk audiences, such as teenagers, who are the most vulnerable and susceptible to these messages are targeted
You Never Know Who Could Be Struggling
Typically, depression is considered a common factor in suicide. However, this isnโt always the case. Some of the most seemingly โhappy-go-luckyโ people may be secretly struggling with a sense of deep sadness and suicidal thoughts. While just about everyone experiences sadness and hopelessness from time to time, those with suicidal thoughts often believe that the world would be better off without them or that life is too painful to continue on. Unfortunately, these thoughts often go masked and unnoticed. Therefore, it is so important to remind people of how much theyโre loved and how much they enrich our lives just by being in them. You never know who could be silently struggling. Simple acts of kindness like reaching out can make all the difference.
