The Power of Visualization

Sometimes, usual practices in your life can stop feeling like they are working. It may feel like you know something needs to change, but you do not know what. Visualization can help you slow down and get in contact with what your intuition is guiding you to change.

What Is Visualization?

Visualization exercises are practices structured to help you gain clarity on what you would like to achieve and work toward in your life and through healing. When practiced consistently, visualization can help you create the change you desire. It can also give you the motivation and momentum to do so by picturing how change is possible for you.

How Does Visualization Work?

The practice of visualization works by focusing all five senses on imagining yourself reaching a goal that you have. Most often, visualization is done by carving out time to be intentional in connecting with what you desire in a way that allows you to clearly see yourself reaching those desires. Then, you can envision what it will feel like when you achieve the things you are taking steps towards.

How Else Can I Practice Visualization?

Other ways to practice visualization for reaching goals you have can include the following:

  • creating a vision board, stating what you desire to experience as if it has already happened, and
  • creating new beliefs rooted in self-confidence and trust that will help you achieve what your heart desires

For instance, you could create a vision board on a poster board or corkboard that represents the goals you have. You could also do this on a computer, through platforms such as Pinterest and Microsoft Word.

In stating what you desire as though it has already happened, you could journal about what it is like to have experienced reaching your goals, even if it has not actually happened yet. When forming new beliefs that empower you rather than derail you, it could be helpful to work with a therapist as you rewrite your story.

Change takes time. Practices such as visualization can help you continue trusting yourself to heal and gain clarity on what actions are required to reach the goals you have for yourself.

Healing from substance use and mental illness is challenging, and practices such as visualization help you gain clarity on what you desire and give you the motivation to begin taking actions that lead to fulfilling those desires.
