What Is Self-Care?

What Is Self-Care?

True self-care is not just about using face masks and having days at the spa. In fact, this type of self-care might be inaccessible for you and many others. Self-care that truly improves your well-being from a holistic perspective is not just about what you want. It looks different for everyone.

Self-Care Is Holistic

True self-care is holistic in nature, meaning you honor yourself through a whole person lens, integrating mind, body, and spirit. In action, this means self-care includes:

  • How you talk to yourself through your internal dialogue
  • How you allow others to talk to you
  • How you take care of your physical body
  • How you nourish your soul
  • What you do for fun
  • What and who you surround yourself with
  • The relationships you are in
  • What you allow yourself to believe is possible for yourself

Self-care is more than the above list, as it would be impossible to encapsulate all of the ways in which you can take care of yourself in words, but this list gives you a starting point.

Self-Care Doesn’t Always Feel Good

Contrary to popular belief, true self-care does not always feel good. Sure, going to the spa, doing yoga, or having a night in to binge a show and eat ice cream may feel great. Self-care also means things like taking care of your finances, working when you do not want to, learning to set boundaries, and taking steps to heal emotional wounds.

Although self-care may not always feel good, and that may not feel easy, it does lead to ease.

Self-Care Looks Different for Everyone

It goes without saying that what works for one person may not work for another. This can be forgotten though, especially when comparison enters your self-care sphere. In figuring out ideal means of self-care, it can be helpful to ask yourself:

  • What does self-care mean to me?
  • What would it look like to take care of myself—mind, body, and spirit?
  • What types of self-care may not feel good at the moment, but are things I know I need?
  • What do I need right now to improve my well-being?

As with all seasons of life, what self-care looks like will shift and pivot as you grow and expand as a person. When taking intentional steps to reconnect with your authentic self, learning what it means to care for yourself, and aligning with your values, considering self-care through a holistic lens is important.

True self-care is holistic and involves taking care of your mind, body, and spirit.
