What is Music Therapy?

At Avalon Malibu, music therapy is just one of the many progressive and effective programs implemented for successful recovery and rehabilitation.

As an expressive therapy, music therapy consists of an interpersonal process in which a certified music therapist (one certified by the AMTA) uses music and all of its facets—physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual—to help clients improve and maintain good health.

Sonic (or sound) therapy is a science as well as an art. The treatment is proven to increase cognitive functioning, motor skills, emotional and affective development, behavior and social skills, as well as an improved quality of life. By using music experiences such as free improvisation, singing, songwriting, and listening to, discussing, and moving to music, clients gain valuable tools to achieve treatment goals and objectives.

How is Music Therapy Used at Avalon Malibu?

In professions surrounding assistance, music therapists are found there in the center. At Avalon Malibu alcohol and drug recovery program, as well as in our mental health treatment program, music-based therapy is utilized to combat and heal behavioral and emotional disorders.

Our clients benefit emotionally and socially from therapy in particular ways that provide a sense of independence and individuality. Our Avalon music program offers a creative outlet to release or control emotions, and find the means to coping with stressful situations. Within our treatment, we utilize music as a way to help reduce stress and lower anxiety levels, which can help to counteract or even prevent depression.

Our model at Avalon Malibu is based on a range of theoretical backgrounds, such as psychodynamic, behavioral, and humanistic approaches. Techniques are classified as active versus receptive and improvisational versus structured.

What Are the Requirements of a Music Therapist?

A professional music therapist is required to hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, from an approved American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) university or college program list, of which there are 70 to choose. The curriculum is intended to impart proficiency in three principal areas: Musical Foundations, Clinical Foundations, and Music Therapy Foundations, including principles specified in the AMTA Professional Competencies.

At Avalon Malibu, our program focuses on advanced clinical practice and research. We employ an established professional who uses music in a therapeutic relationship intended to address the cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs of every individual.

After assessing the needs of each client, our Avalon music therapist provides the indicated treatment, moving to, integrating creating, singing, humming and listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, our clients’ abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of recovery.

What is the AMTA?

AMTA or, the American Music Therapy Association, is a professional group committed to the advancement of education, professional standards, credentials, training, and research in support of the profession. The group is the center for research and the forward-thinking development of music used in rehabilitation. As music’s therapeutic use in special education and community settings continues, so does our search for the custom treatment for chemical and emotional dependency for our clients at Avalon Malibu.
